This is general information you will need with regard to the FFD Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on Systemic Issues taking place in New York City.

 

Hotel Information

 

A block of rooms is reserved at the Comfort Inn Long Island City which is 1.5 miles from the UN and easily reachable by subway. The price is $130 per night and the hotel is located at 4224 Crescent St, Long Island City, NY. A few extra rooms are still available. Please coordinate reservations with Ms. Jamie Baker (work: 202-533-2580; cell: 202-247-7486; jbaker@new-rules.org) by 4pm on Monday, May 16.

 

Additional hotels can be found at www.lodging.com or www.hotels.com or www.expedia.com. When you use these sites you can specify hotels close to a landmark. In this case be sure to choose United Nations Headquarters.

Airport Transfers

 

For arrivals at John F. Kennedy airport, please go to the Ground Transportation Counter and ask for the SuperShuttle (blue van).  Give the name of your hotel (travel time about 1 hour).  The shuttle costs $17.00 one way (no round trip fare). When you depart, you can call from the hotel (212-258-3826) the day before (24 hours) to make the reservation to go back to the airport.

 

For arrivals at Newark please go to the Ground Transportation Counter (Olympia Trails Busline) and buy a ticket to Grand Central Station (cost US$12.00 one way, $19 roundtrip).  The bus will drop passengers off at 41st Street between Lexington and Park Avenues (travel time between 30-60 minutes).

 

For those arriving who want to take a taxi.  You should only take a licensed YELLOW taxi.

  • Arriving at JFK Airport the flat rate charge is $35 (plus $3.50 for the toll and we suggest a tip of $5.00 – total of $43.50) to Manhattan.

  • Arriving at Newark Airport the trip should cost approximately $40 -$45 plus tip (approximately $5.00) and toll $5.00 = approximately $50 - $55 total.

Logistics for Wednesday morning, May 18th

 

The consultation will begin promptly at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18,

2005 with a welcome and opening session featuring Jose Antonio Ocampo, Undersecretary General for Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations. Please be sure to arrive at 9:00 am to get your UN passes. When you arrive at the United Nations enter at the Visitors’ Entrance located at 46th & 1st Avenue.  If you arrive between 9:00 – 9:45 you will find a table where you can pick up your UN pass. The pass is for 2-days; make sure that you bring it to the meeting both days to gain entry into the building.

 

If you will be arriving at an alternative time and need to get your UN pass please let us know approximately what time you will be arriving.  You can reach Daniel Platz at 212 963-3664 (work) / 646-541-4334 (mobile) or Jamie Baker at 202-247-7486 If you are having difficulties obtaining your UN pass. On May 18th the meeting will take place in conference room 9, Level B1, Main UN Building.

 

Lunch, May 18th

 

This lunch is by invitation only and will take place in Private Dining Room 1. Sandra Polaski, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will be talking about Labor Issues and Development.

 

Reception, May 18th

 

Following the consultation there will be a reception at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation at 823 United Nations Plaza, Suite 711, cross First Avenue at 46th Street. This reception is by invitation only. Use your UN pass and photo ID to gain access to the building and proceed to room 711. After the reception we anticipate that small groups will be going off to have dinner in nearby restaurants.

 

Logistics for afternoon of 18 May and May 19, 2005

 

Please remember to bring your UN Pass with you to gain entry to the building. The meeting will be taking place in UN Conference Room DC2, 2 UN Plaza (entrance on 44th Street) 23rd Floor.

 

On May 19, we will break for lunch from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. There is no organized lunch for this day, but there are sandwich shops and parks nearby. A movie on Indigenous Peoples will be showing during lunch in the Dag Hammarskjold Library in the UN.

 

Weather

 

The weather in New York City is approximately 55 (low) to 62 (high) degrees Fahrenheit or 13 (low) to 17 (high) degrees Celsius.  There is a 20% chance of precipitation.
