Enhancing Democratic Governance and Parliament Oversight of the International Financial Institutions

Saturday 22 Apr 2006

4.00 pm–5.30 pm

Bank Information Center

1100 H Street NW, Suite 650, Washington, DC

The Democratic Governance and Parliamentary Oversight (DGPO) Project seeks to develop a global network of leading civil society organizations, academic centers, and parliamentary groups to promote promising strategies for enhancing the democratic governance and parliamentary oversight of the international financial institutions (IFIs), namely the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and regional development banks. This public seminar will highlight the DGPO project's ongoing research agenda and activities of leading country partners in Brazil, Ghana, India, and Indonesia to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) to support and to promote parliamentary initiatives that enhance the accountability of the IFIs at the national, regional and global levels. Panelists include: Marcus de Faro (Rede Brasil, Brazil); Smitu Kothari (Intercultural Resources, India); Chris Wangkay (INFID, Indonesia); and Jim Riker (New Rules for Global Finance).
