New Rules for Global Finance

Organizes a monthly FFD meeting in DC.

The consensus reached at the 2002 Monterrey International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD) mandates that the voice of civil society be part of the process of implementing the conference's objectives. Later on this year, the development community will have multiple opportunities to influence policy decisions on FFD at the Doha Review Conference.

The calendar leading up to the Doha conference includes various events in which the participation of civil society is critical. These events will help produce an agenda in preparation for the main review conference that will be held from November 29 through December 2 in Doha, Qatar. The goal of the Doha Review Conference, according to UN General Assembly resolution 61/191, is to "assess progress made, reaffirm goals and commitments and share best practices and lessons learned," and discuss implementation challenges.

The preparatory events and the Doha conference are open to organizations that are accredited or have consultative status with the UN. Those that are interested in gaining access to the events should get in touch with Daniel Platz, the NGO focal point for the UN's Financing for Development Office. Newsletters are available to download on the UN's FFD web site. For 2008 the UN has organized six review sessions for each of the thematic chapters of the Monterrey Consensus. They include:

(Summary from Interaction's March 2008 Monday Developments "Road to Doha: ways to Get Involved" by Raul Arce & Jamie Baker).

*Organizations interested in gaining access to the UN-organized events can contact Daniel Platz, the NGO focal point for the UN’s Financing for Development Office. The UN team in charge of FFD also produces periodical newsletters that outline the events and provide details on accreditation procedures.  www.un.org/esa/ffd
